CV Technology experiences boom after successful Trade Show

(WEST PALM BEACH, FL) June 10, 2006 — After a successful display at the 2006 Powder & Bulk Solids Conference, CV Technology, a leading explosion consulting and protection company located in West Palm Beach, FL, encounters an influx in market response. The main spotlight is on dust explosion and its deflagration via a sophisticated device called the QROHR. CV Technology is the nations leader in explosion mitigation.

How does a dust explosion differ from a deflagration? In practical terms, if a vent opens to allow a developing explosion to escape without causing a breach of the enclosure, the event is a deflagration. When a deflagration vents, a pressure wave emerges first, followed by both burning and unburned dust, then by a flameball.

The flameball uses the dust cloud for fuel, which makes for an efficient deflagration. Most deflagrations are not 100 percent efficient. That is, they do not use up all the dust. Ducts are used to help steer the deflagration to a safer area so that all dust and flame are allowed to escape with minimal to no residual damage.

These ducts provide there own set of challenges. “Explosions move at such a fast rate, in straight lines, but in all directions.” Explains Bill Stevenson, General Manager for CV Technology, “Because of the location of the epicenter,” says Stevenson, “it is not always possible to duct an explosion vent out to a safe area.” He explains some of the other factors such as when a duct reaches the outside of the building, weather caps must be used to prevent environmental elements from entering the duct. The weather caps must then be secured so as not to present a danger when the deflagration arrives. Ice and snow can further complicate things.

So what can be done more to add protection where traditional mitigation techniques fall short? CV Technology is the exclusive authorized agent for the QROHR in North America and is the sales leader worldwide. The QROHR is a passive apparatus that combines elements of venting, suppression and containment. The QROHR was developed to safely protect a vessel inside a building without the need for ducting to the outside. On the base of the QROHR device is a disc (known as a rupture disc) that allows a developing deflagration to vent out of the protected vessel into the device chamber. Within the chamber, a thick layer of stainless-steel mesh acts as a filter to prevent dust from escaping as well as a heat sink to absorb the heat from the flameball. No dust or flame escapes and, in most applications, the pressure is too low to measure.

“The QROHR is best for small-to-medium size vessels handling most carbonaceous dusts and some gases” explains Stevenson. CV Technology helps plant managers estimate what size the flameball might be and utilize the correct size QROHR to ensure safety should an event take place. In other words to make sure there is a deflagration, not a dust explosion.

CV Technology combines a legacy of experienced explosion consulting with revolutionary and completely unique explosion prevention and explosion protection technologies to specialize in the prevention, protection, and elimination of dust explosion hazards in all industries which process powders and dry bulk materials.
