Soldiers go hunting for new career options.

The dynamics of the job market has influenced the heroes of our frontiers as well. Ex-Defence Officers now sport designer C.V’s and throng the offices of recruitment consultants. After IIM – Lucknow, many academic institutes have designed special courses for defence officers. These courses incorporate topics as corporate governance, marketing, communication and have majors in HR, marketing and finance.

DefenceIndia, a leading online thought provoker on Defence Features, has initiated a specialized talent advisory for corporates. This division advises companies on talent acquisition from the pool of ex-defence officers and soldiers. The division also advises officers and soldiers on career options.

In the one month of the division’s inception, DefenceIndia has generated an impressive talent base. This base includes officers with a service record of 6 to 30 years. Apart from career advisory services, DefenceIndia has also initiated a cultural adjustment workshop as part of its ‘Learn to Unlearn’ initiative. This workshop was a result of the feedback received from corporate interactions.

This HR initiative has come on the heels of the earlier DefenceIndia initiative. A survey conducted nationwide, on the query, ‘Do Ex-servicemen make better managers’.

The results of this path-breaking survey, proved that corporate entities are opening their doors to ex-defence officers. The offers being received by ex-defence officers have also gone radical. Gone are the days when the ex-defence officers were presumed apt for old-school roles as Admin Officers, Security Incharges, Deans and in rare cases, HR managers. These days, we can find ex-defence officers sharing new age responsibilities in journalism, radio jockeying, business development, client servicing, advertising and even acting

The results of the survey highlighted the perceptions about the erstwhile soldiers being positive, constructive, highly adaptive and successful in the new age businesses and in new avatars of financial whizzes, marketing stalwarts, advertising and communication experts, even radio jockeys and electronic channel reporters et al, was a real eye opener.

It is not uncommon today to find ex-defence officers at the helm in new age businesses and prove their mettle in diverse sectors and in the midst of professionals from the civil life.
