Hampshire, June 15. Specialist travel insurance provider, P J Hayman and Company Ltd, has responded to growing public concern about Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT), by being first to launch a new online travel insurance policy, 24/7 Travel Insurance, that covers DVT, in addition to the comprehensive range of cover normally expected in a travel insurance policy.

A deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clot that develops in a deep vein, usually in the lower leg. In most cases of DVT, the clots are small and do not cause any symptoms as the body is able to gradually break down the clot without any long-term effects.

However, public concern has been heightened due to a number of well-publicised cases of travellers developing complications from DVT. A typical example is where a piece of the blood clot breaks off and travels in the bloodstream to the lungs and blocks blood flow, known as a pulmonary embolism. Complications can arise hours or even days after the formation of a clot and in some instances can be fatal.

24/7 Travel Insurance not only provides immediate emergency medical assistance cover for a traveller contracting DVT, but also provides a unique benefit of £10,000 in the event that death occurs during the trip or within 72 hours from the time of the policyholder’s arrival home. To date, no other insurer has taken this initiative.

P J Hayman’s Managing Director, Peter Hayman, commented:

“The recent House of Lords ruling against DVT sufferers’ right to sue airlines has again highlighted public concern over this issue. Our new policy responds to this concern by ensuring that families are able to cope financially with the immediate aftermath should the unthinkable happen to a loved one who contracts DVT. “

Peter Hayman added:
“We have a reputation of providing cover in instances where the majority of travel insurers will not, such as on the grounds of age and existing medical conditions. We have again proved with 24/7 Travel Insurance, that the travel insurance industry should be doing more both in terms of the availability and scope of cover travellers require.”
