An organization that has been training professional mediators throughout Oklahoma for nearly 15 years has recently opened a Tulsa office. “The demand for quality mediation services has grown significantly in the Tulsa area in recent years,” explained Jim Stovall, Director for the Mediation Institute. The Tulsa office will be staffed by Associate Directors Shelly Kamm and Brenda Spencer. The Tulsa office will provide regular training opportunities for individuals interested in getting into mediation on a professional basis as well as providing mediation services in family, divorce and business matters.

The Mediation Institute has been offering training in mediation in Oklahoma since 1992. The courses meet the training requirements for professional mediators to qualify for the Tulsa District Court Families in Transition program and are approved by the Oklahoma Bar Association for mandatory continuing legal education.
Mediation is a court-approved process in which an impartial trained person facilitates the resolution of a dispute between two or more parties. It is a confidential and non-adversarial process, with the objective of helping parties reach a mutually acceptable agreement. Judges throughout Oklahoma are referring family matters to mediation in the hope that all types of legal matters might be resolved on a voluntary basis avoiding an expensive legal battle. Individuals who complete the courses receive a certificate and become qualified to assist in resolving a variety of legal matters.
