Milwaukee, Wis. – During the month of March, Miller Brewing Co. and three of its distributors, W.O.W. Distributing Co., C.J.W., Inc., and Miller Brands, as well as Cousin’s Subs took part in the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s Shamrocks Against Dystrophy.
This nationwide program is supported by patrons of thousands of businesses who purchase and sign $1 and $5 Shamrock mobiles and hang them in supermarkets, convenience stores, restaurants and other retailer outlets. In doing so, they are supporting MDA’s fight against neuromuscular diseases as well as creating a colorful display of green and gold shamrocks.
Nationally, Shamrocks Against Dystrophy raised over $12 million in 2005 and is expecting about $15 million for 2006. In Wisconsin last year, Miller Brewing collectively raised $19, 815.55 and this year raised $38,132. In 2005, Cousin’s Subs raised $9,873 and this year raised $10,104.
Internationally renowned signer Maureen McGovern served as the chairperson of Shamrocks Against Dystrophy, and is also a member of MDA’s Board of Directors and a performer on the Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon.
“Words can’t express the importance of this special MDA program,” said McGovern, whose teenage niece is affected by one of the diseases in the Association’s program. “MDA is near and dear to my heart – not just because it has helped improve the life of someone I love, but because it offers help and hope to tens of thousands of other families.”
Funds raised through the Shamrocks program support MDA’s vital research and service programs, including 90 summer camps and some 240 local MDA clinics.
MDA is a voluntary health agency working to defeat more than 40 neuromuscular diseases through programs of worldwide research, comprehensive services, and far-reaching professional and public health education.
