The Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) is seeking volunteers to answer phones and help out behind the scenes at this year’s Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon, airing on Detroit’s MY 20, September 3-4.

The Telethon raises funds to support MDA’s programs of worldwide research, public health education, and services for people affected by over 40 neuromuscular diseases. The national broadcast originates in Las Vegas at the South Coast Hotel and cuts to frequent local segments here in Detroit. In 2005, over $ 1.6 million was raised here in the Metro Detroit Area.

Proceeds from the Telethon will assist more than 1,800 MDA families in the Metro Detroit Area. MDA provides assistance in the purchases of wheelchairs, leg braces and communication devices for patients, offers five support groups., and sends children to summer camp. MDA’s Summer Camp takes place in late June and early July at Camp Cavell in Lexington, as well as at Bear Lake Camp in Lapeer.
MDA (www.mda.org) is a non-profit organization and is the number one provider of neuromuscular research. This voluntary health agency works to defeat 43 neuromuscular diseases through programs of worldwide research, comprehensive services, and far-reaching professional and public health education.
