TOMS RIVER, NJ – (August 5, 2006)—To some of us, the scariest part of growing old isn’t only about wrinkles, but if we will be able to care for ourselves. As the nation experiences a shift in the age population, adults are living longer and may need assistance as they continue to mature. Currently, between 85-92% of the population that ages in place is not aware of the simple modifications to accommodate the aging process. Thus, working with a certified Aging-In-Place specialist can aid in creating a safe environment, helping to make daily activities such as dressing and bathing effortless.

“Older adults want to live out their lives at home,” says Carrie Fusella, President of Design Alternatives Inc. and Certified Senior Advisor. “Only 8-12% of our aging population chooses to live-out their lives in assisted living communities, so we need to stress the importance of teaching the rest how to age in place gracefully and more importantly safely.”

Many steps can be taken to insure safety and independence, regardless of age. Fusella’s simple suggestions that require no installation include:

Creating good traffic flow: Reduce the amount of furniture to make it easier to get around, allow more space for canes and wheelchairs

Removing tripping hazards: Throw rugs may be pretty but many can be dangerous, one of the most frequent accidents is slipping on poorly firm floor surfaces

Raising the level of illumination and keep it consistent: Uneven brightness can create the appearance of steps at locations where shadows meet, resulting in depth perception problems

Selecting Surfaces and Furnishings can help hearing: A room that has soft (sound absorbing) and hard surfaces (furniture) placed appropriately make communication easier by reflecting or amplifying sound waves
