Bridgeport, August 5, 2006 — The Bridgeport Fire Department Local 834 will run a Fill-the-Boot drive to support the Muscular Dystrophy Association in its fight against neuromuscular disease. On Friday, August 18 officers and members from the department will be out in Bridgeport asking for contributions to benefit MDA. With Fill-the-Boot, firefighters seek to fill their uniform boots with donations.

Firefighters will be collecting at intersections near the city’s firehouses. They will be outside from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on August 18.
The Bridgeport department has been filling the boot for MDA for years. In the past six years, this local has raised a total of $84,165 for MDA. With the August 18 Fill-the-Boot drive and the department’s upcoming 7th Annual Walter Flyntz/ MDA Golf Tournament on September 14, the Bridgeport Firefighters are aiming to raise another $25,000 to aid in MDA’s continuing efforts against neuromuscular disease.

The Muscular Dystrophy Association is a voluntary health organization working to defeat more than 40 neuromuscular diseases through programs of worldwide research, comprehensive services, and far-reaching professional and public health education. MDA’s programs include its annual Summer Camps, which welcome kids with muscle-wasting diseases each year at no cost to families. Children from Fairfield County will attend MDA’s Summer Camp in Spring Valley, N.Y. in August 2006.
