Wilmington, DE August 8, 2006 — The nation is fast approaching the 5th anniversary of the event that shook the world, the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. On September 11th, 5 years ago, most Americans awoke to moment-by-moment television coverage describing the events of that fateful day.

But a new DVD documentary entitled “Answering The Call: Ground Zero’s Volunteers,” (to be released this week) offers viewers a unique opportunity to experience the rescue and recovery operation at the Trade Center first hand – from the perspective of the rescuers and volunteers who served on the front lines at Ground Zero.

Directed by filmmaker and former firefighter, Lou Angeli, and narrated by famed actress Kathleen Turner, “Answering The Call” presents the Ground Zero volunteer community as an important component of the rescue effort — everyday people working together in an effort to save lives. Both Turner and Angeli served as volunteers at Ground Zero.

What many Americans don’t know is the sheer size and magnitude of the rescue effort, as 70,000 citizens from all over the nation and the world streamed to lower Manhattan in answer to New York City's call for help. “The film is most notable for its extensive interviews with many of the people who put their lives on the line,” writes Frank Scheck of the Hollywood Reporter. The images conjured are ones of courage, heroism, fearlessness, endurance — in other words the true human spirit.

The documentary’s timeline overlaps that of Oliver Stone’s new film, “World Trade Center.” However “Answering The Call” is not a re-creation. It is a vivid, behind-the-scenes recollection, which carries the viewer further and deeper onto the disaster scene than any previous film.

“Answering The Call” was introduced this past year to select audiences and excellent reviews, but with its DVD release this important historical document is now available for everyone to view. In an industry known for capitalizing on disasters, the film’s production company, Chesca Media Group, is retailing “Answering The Call” for between five and six dollars.

"We developed this film in order to reach the largest possible audience,’ director Angeli notes, ‘so it could be viewed in every home, classroom, church, fire station and office.”

ATC is available through dozens of retail and online stores, including Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Barnes and Noble, Borders and many, many others. A cable-broadcast version of the film entitled “Everyday Heroes” is currently being developed.

The director, who spent 16 days working at the World Trade Center site, is available to discuss the project with members of the press. As a Ground Zero veteran and filmmaker, Mr. Angeli is also uniquely qualified to comment on Oliver Stone’s “World Trade Center.” Screeners are available for interested reviewers and a Betacam clip reel of “Answering The Call” is available to interested broadcast news agencies.
