OrangeJewelry.com - online Robbery on Valentine’s Day

February 17, 2005 (PRLEAP.COM) Technology News
Jewelry stores robberies have a long history but this is the first time reported of an online Jewelry store robbery. OrangeJewelry.com, a fine jewelry online store, was ‘robbed’ on Tuesday the 8th of Feb 13:56 PST, where ‘armed’ hacker(s) broke into the online store and ‘cleaned up it shelves’ (deleting the store products database) valued at US$300,000.

Consequently, OrangeJewelry.com was closed for over 6 days, during its busiest period, Valentine’s Day, while trying to recover from the robbery carrying an estimate revenue loss of US$15,000 says Amber Newton, financial controller and partner at OrangeJewelry.com.

“In your traditional jewelry store you will have your stock and revenue losses insured from events like this, but this is not the case with online shops” Says Newton. In addition, placing ‘security guards’ in the form of SSL (Secure Socket Layer) and Firewalls is not enough when the hackers are one step a head of the industry. We are planing on learning from this experience and have tightened our security mechanism and are hopping it will not happen again. We are also hoping that the insurance industry will come up with suitable products for our industry. The online world must listen to our pain and learn from our mistakes.
