“They asked, no begged actually, for us to throw Stabat Mater in,” says Laing, describing how the play ended up in this year’s EODL lineup. “Some of the folks had seen it last year and really, really, really wanted to see it again.”

Stabat Mater is a full-length play of three waiting women, three epic ages, and one unimaginable purgatory: awaiting the return of a child gone off to war. Laing weaves insight, humour and depth into this one-act play, masterfully telling a story of opposing forces — love and hate, peace and anger. As quoted from the October 22, 2006 issue Kemptville Weekender, Stabat Mater “is about the similarities in feelings between mothers of soldiers across time, geography and politics. This commonality is portrayed by three women who speak separately yet finish one another’s thoughts and sentences.”

The play, written and directed by Laing, will feature Colette Hutten as Petra, Brenda Mead as Roxanne, Andrea Maclellan as Crystal and Denise Lafortune as Victoria. Glenna Walkden will produce the play. The three-day festival kicks off Friday, November 3 at the North Grenville Municipal Centre theatre. Stabat Mater will play Saturday night, November 4 at 7:30 p.m. For tickets, call Elaine at 613-258-5137, visit Business Solutions in the Kemptville Mall, or go online to www.kemptvilleplayers.ca for more details.
