The day before Lance Armstrong ties up the laces of his Nike running shoes for his New York City Marathon debut, he made a stop at Paragon Sports, the legendary sporting goods store in Union Square. The 7-time Tour de France winner and cancer survivor, spoke to hundreds of excited fans at Paragon Sports about his marathon preparation, the work of The Lance Armstrong Foundation and his new line of Nike clothing called 10//2. Among the fans in attendance at the Paragon Sports event was a group of runners from Bronxville High School in New York, who were inspired and motivated by Armstrong’s presence.
The November 5th event is a lifelong goal of Armstrong and will take place just a few weeks following another important life milestone – the 10th anniversary of his cancer diagnosis. Responding to a question about his possible advantages over some of the other runners in the competition, Armstrong coined his perspective as a major advantage over the other runners. Going through and beating cancer “changed his life forever” and gave him a new perspective on life. It was that new view of the world that spurred him on to win 7-Tour de France races and live life knowing that since he beat cancer, he can do anything he wants, even run the New York City Marathon.
Much anticipation has been building about a possible finish time for Armstrong, who, when questioned, said “I would be very happy to post a sub-3 hour time, but since this is all new for me, I just hope to God that I can finish.”
