According to a consumer traffic analysis done by comScore Media Metrix on a number of top online classifieds sites, the traffic has increased by a total of 47% as compared to last year. Craig’s list, a premier classifieds site, of course had the greatest increase with its traffic surging up to 99% more than the previous year. Although the analysis only included top ranking sites things are indeed looking up for the entire classifieds market. According to Andrew Lipsman, a senior analyst at comScore Networks, “"While online classifieds are not new, it appears that Internet users are really beginning to catch on to this phenomenon…With nearly 50% growth in the past year, online classifieds are growing at a rate that surpasses most other categories."

With such a rapid growth rate the demand for classifieds businesses and companies whose previous experience with online classifieds might not have been rewarding will find that using online classifieds nowadays a totally different experience. People are not just browsing in top sites like Craig’s list but are using local online classifieds and almost any online classifieds they run into. One explanation for this might be that people are turning from getting information from print publications to finding information from the internet. In a survey done by RealtyTimes.com 58% of respondents indicated they are raising their advertising budgets this year, but the majority said they would be spending the bulk of their money online on their own Web sites. This is because of the feeling that people no longer find print publications to be very useful as compared to getting information from the web. The internet after all has made it easier to search for specifics and to contact people and businesses.

As both businesses look to the internet to advertise their products and services, and as more customers find themselves relying on the internet to help them find products and services that will suit their needs, the classifieds market can only gain by having increased advertisements as well as traffic to their sites. More classifieds site will sure crop up offering great features and value added services. Craig’s list will undoubtedly continue to rake in the most traffic but with the great demand there is still a place for start-up classifieds. After all advertisers know that you can’t advertise in too many places… especially if the classifieds site offers free advertising space. Advertisers will find that placing ads in start-up sites can also be very beneficial because start-up classifieds in their search for new customers give very nice incentives. By placing ads on new classifieds sites advertisers also get to have prominent position as one of the first advertisers and so will be easily noticed by searchers.
