Barrie, ON – November 15, 2006 – World-renowned local photographer Edward Burtynsky’s dinner and artist talk to benefit the MacLaren Art Centre attained great success and recognition for the arts in Barrie this past weekend. Burtynsky, who was recently the subject of 2006 Toronto International Film Festival’s Best Canadian Film Manufactured Landscapes, spoke to a crowd of nearly 150 of Barrie’s art lovers including Mayor Rob Hamilton.

The evening incorporated Burtynsky’s enlightening description of his powerful images taken in China, highlighting the destructive impact of industrialization and globalization on landscape and environment. Burtynsky depicts what he calls “metaphors to the dilemma of our modern existence” in his works.

The evening raised approximately $30,000, the proceeds from which will benefit the MacLaren Art Centre, including three pieces donated by Burtynsky himself for auction. Attendees were treated to amazing Canadian Artesian cheeses and other delicious gourmet fare provided by Oscar’s restaurant.

This event was initiated by volunteers Ollie Moffatt, Lori Elliott and the MacLaren Art Centre.
