Setbacks Aside, U.S. Nutritional Supplements Market Set to Top $6 Billion by 2011!

New York, November 17, 2006 — Despite negative media reports about their efficacy—including purported risks of taking vitamin E—the latest market research shows nutritional supplement sales growing upwards of $6 billion by 2011, according to Nutritional Supplements in the U.S., a new report from Packaged Facts.

Packaged Facts projects that the nutritional supplements market will reach $4.7 billion by years end, a 1.0% increase over 2005. While bad press may have contributed to a nearly 3% loss in 2005, overall market growth has been respectable, with sales from 2002 to 2006 increasing by more than 6%.

The multivitamin category, second only to general supplements, saw impressive gains between 2001 and 2005, as did the smallest category, liquid vitamins, which jumped by $5.6 million over the same time period. Not surprisingly, one and two letter vitamins suffered sales decline each year, with the most dramatic drop in 2005.

Yet 2005 also saw an industry defying negativism. Manufacturers focused on new product introductions which rose by 33% and included a heavier focus on driving home the therapeutic benefits of supplementation. Introductions included products touting multiple condition-specific benefits, as well as using alternative delivery systems, such as food and beverage forms.

“Long-term health benefits and prevention are the leading motivators, particularly for Baby Boomers, who are big on supplementation as a means to wellness,” notes Don Montuori, the publisher of Packaged Facts. “Age-related condition-specific products, including weight, diabetes, joint, and eye health, as well as heavy emphasis on the Os—Omega-3s and organics—will continue to proliferate in the years ahead. We can also expect functional foods and beverages to continue stealing some of the thunder from traditional supplements.”

Providing a comprehensive look at vitamins, minerals, herbal and combination supplements, Nutritional Supplements in the U.S. examines new product trends, offers competitive profiles of industry leaders, and looks at consumer trends and behaviors surrounding the increasing use of vitamins and supplements.
