Sornammal Educational Trust’s 6th Sornammal Day

Sornammal Educational Trust was started in the year 1996 by three professionals from Ma Foi Management Consultants Ltd to provide financial assistance to poor but bright students. The trust has so far helped 1600 bright children get quality education and exposure through its school and scholarship schemes.

The trust has touched the lives of more than 3000 women to help them manage their livelihood by forming Self Help groups in Central Madras Constituency. As a registered NGO under Magalir Thittam it has helped women get more than 20 Lakhs loan from banks and facilitated training and occupational support to start Micro Enterprises.

Sornammal Educational Trust celebrated its anniversary as Sornammal Day on 25th of November 2006. This day witnessed the coming together of Young Achievers across Tamil Nadu, Scholarship receiving students; Champions and the best Self help Groups in Chennai.
The Guests of Honour, Mr M P Vasimalai presented ‘Synapse’, The inter school championship awards to Daniel Thomas Matriculation Higher Secondary school. Poet Kanimozhi Karunanidhi presented the Sornammal Young Achiever. Ms. Supriya Sahu, Project Director, TANSAC, presented the Ezhuchi Virudhu. Dr A.N Kalanithi Sornammal presented Special Awards to Self Help Groups and the prize for Inter group cultural competitions
10 Young Achiever Awards were awarded to 10 deserving students in the following categories:
Academics, Athletics, Creative writing, Dance ,Magic, Music, Science, Shooting, Swimming, Visual Art.

Each of them was given a cash prize and a Trophy. These ten students were selected out of 153 applicants and were selected based on parameters like: Nature of the achievement, Area of achievement: (Academics, extra curricular), Difficulty of the achievement, School’s teacher’s recommendation or Community Service Leader’s or Extracurricular advisor’s recommendation, their Socio Economic Back ground and a Personal Interview.
This year the trust introduced a new award for Self Help Groups – The Ezhuchi Award: This award recognized 30 best women Self Help Groups from 10 zones of Chennai Corporation. The winners were given a cash prize, a citation and a trophy. Awardees were selected based on prudence exhibited in managing financial transaction, developing the micro enterprise and contributing significantly to the growth of the community at large.

The cultural feast provided by Kuthupattarai made it a grand evening.
