MOVING TO A WINTER WONDERLAND

December 05, 2006 (PRLEAP.COM) Lifestyle News
There’s something magical about snow-capped mountains, a frosty morning and a perfectly formed icicle, but for those not used to winter weather, these natural wonders can be both daunting and concerning. United Van Lines offers these tips for making the most out of a new winter playground.

· Bundle up! – When packing for your move, make sure you keep warm clothes handy. Pack items such as hats, scarves, gloves, boots and coats for the entire family. If you’re moving from an area that doesn’t experience winter weather and you don’t already own these items, budget for a shopping trip upon arrival at your destination.

· Safe travels – If you are driving to your destination, make sure to you stock it with safety necessities including a first aid kit, flashlight, extra batteries, bottled water, canned food and can opener, gloves, hat, matches and tire devices (chains). And plan to get your car winterized at the local automotive shop before embarking on the journey.

· Winterize your home – After moving into your new home, make sure that it is ready for the months of winter ahead. To save on heating bills, consider insulating under your floors and in the attic and by caulking and weather-stripping doors and windows. Insulate any water lines that run along outer walls (water will be less likely to freeze that way). That new fireplace in your home will be so tempting but before throwing in the first log, ensure that the chimney and flue are inspected and swept if necessary. To prevent unnecessary slips and falls, purchase a snow shovel and bag of ice melt from the local home improvement store and keep your driveway and front steps clear of snow and ice. Finally, install an easy-to-read outdoor thermometer – you’ll be able to keep an eye on falling and rising temperatures and plan accordingly.

· Get acquainted with the area – Become familiar your new city’s local radio and TV stations to stay abreast of any road, school and other business closures that may be caused by winter-weather conditions. Also get recommendations for a local family physician in case the winter flu strikes.

· Go Play! –Take the family out for a day in the snow; there is a winter sport for everyone. Try ice-skating, sledding, snowshoeing, downhill or cross-country skiing, or if relaxing is more your style, just find a cozy lodge with a fireplace and great hot chocolate.

· Relish in the idea of having a white holiday season – After all these years of hearing about snowy holidays on the radio and television, take time to enjoy it firsthand. Build a snowman, put up extra holiday lights, make a snow angel or take on the kids in a good-natured snowball flight.
