Ending the Year Polynesian-Style

Pomona, CA - After a widely successful 2006, the Polynesian Paradise Dancers (PPD) rounded out the year with their annual ho'ike (concert) at Cal Poly Pomona's University Theater. Aptly entitled "One Soul," the company showcased a fusion of traditional Polynesian dance with modern influences through unique and original choreography composed by the company members themselves.

"It is our mission to preserve the Polynesian culture," shares company founder and director, Akemi Welsh. "However, I have taken artistic liberties in this year's representation. It is not meant to offend or misrepresent any culture," she adds. "It is purely an artistic expression with the intent to entertain."

After 2 months of hard work and rehearsals, "One Soul" proved to be a captivating performance that took the audience through an array of emotions. Beginning with a culturally rooted Kahiko, or ancient hula, and ending with an exhilarating performance featuring vibrant Tahitian dancers, fire poi and an amazing fire knife dancer, the company showcased choreography that touched all senses. The show also featured a graceful hula to Jack Johnson's "Better Together," as well as a rather humorous rendition of "Hawaiian War Chant."

Noteworthy pieces were the traditional piece, "Kehe'a," by Kahala Cruz and the modern piece"Hurt," by Akemi Welsh. Although the two numbers represented opposite styles, both were equally emotionally-charged and exquisitely performed.

After wrapping up an amazing 2006 season, it seems that the success of "One Soul" is just like icing on the cake. With 4 international tours under their belt, PPD has already confirmed 2 more tours in China as well as the World Fest, a 23-day tour held next spring in Branson, MO.
