World Pain Management Drugs and Devices to Top $33 Billion by 2010

New York, December 10, 2006 — As the world population continues to age and the incidence of chronic pain conditions increases, the global market for pain management drugs and devices will continue to grow steadily from its expected year-end revenues of $26 billion to more than $33 billion in 2010, according to new market research from Kalorama Information.

The World Market for Pain Management Drugs and Devices projects that the market will grow more than 6% from 2006 to 2010 based on strong performance in the neuropathic, musculoskeletal, and device pain treatment segments. However, the largest segment in 2006 will be cancer pain treatments with nearly $7 billion in revenues. The escalating world cancer incidence as well as the global focus on breakthrough cancer treatments will continue to keep this segment healthy over the next four years.

Yet even with recent advancements, the study finds many issues that are impacting the pain management market including drug recalls, side effects, and restrictive policies. The fact that in 2003 there were 48 new medications in development and in 2006 there were 163, supports the premise that with all the medications currently available, there is still a great need for new and better treatments.

“The pain market, in general, is characterized by a vast underserved patient population, especially in the area of neuropathic and inflammatory/nociceptive pain,” notes Mary Anne Crandall, the report’s author. “However, research and development are booming due to this strong need for new efficacious and better tolerated medications which will be key drivers to future growth.”

The study examines the global market for therapeutics in the following categories: burn, cancer, dental/facial, migraine headache, musculoskeletal, neuropathic, obstetrical, pediatric, surgical, and trauma pain.

This Second Edition of The World Market for Pain Management Drugs and Devices details the prescription pain management drugs in each category, focusing on U.S., Europe, Japan, and ROW markets. It also covers drug delivery methods, pain management devices, and alternate treatment modalities that are influencing the market.
