Wallpaper: The Perfect Solution for Decorating Children’s Rooms

CHICAGO – According to the Wallcoverings Association (WA), wallpaper is the latest craze in decorating mediums—especially for children’s rooms. As TV’s decorating guru and WA spokesperson Robert Verdi says, wallcoverings are the “Triple Play: Color, texture, and design.”

“Simply put, wallcoverings are an all-inclusive solution to home decorating,” says WA executive director Ron Pietrzak.

“Whether one is decorating for a newborn all the way up to a teen, wallpaper designs run the gamut for kids,” said Paula Berberian, creative services manager, Brewster Wallcovering Company. “Actually, one of the hottest growth segments for wallpaper sales is for kids between age nine and age 16.”

Kids today are changing their preferences about everything from vegetables to clothes faster than most families can keep up. For this reason alone, wallpaper is making many parents—and their children—very happy in terms of home design.

“These kids are totally into how they look, and are just as interested in how their rooms are decorated,” Berberian said.

“Parents need to know that ultra-removable wallpapers make a lot of sense in their kids’ rooms because they may have to change it more rapidly than any other wallpapers in their homes,” said P.J. Delaye, director of marketing, York Wallcoverings.

The evolution of non-woven substrates, a break-through type of wallcovering that is breathable, easy to apply and even easier to remove, is exciting interior designers everywhere.

In fact, Verdi is telling consumers exactly that. Verdi has been incorporating wallpaper into children’s room designs whenever possible. He even hopes to decorate the nursery of The View’s Elisabeth Hasselbeck’s baby-to-be using this fashion-forward medium.

“There are a ton of innovative designs and products out there that guarantee to make for a very special kids room: Check out the new murals or the new “art accent groups,” said Delaye.

Art accent groups are wallpaper elements or a group of borders that enable the creation of custom designs. This new collection is yet another way the wallcoverings industry has created the “Triple Play” for the home.

Another trend in decorating children’s rooms, are murals. Many wallcovering companies are teaming up with kid-friendly brands to help fulfill children’s decorating wishes, by incorporating larger than life scenes of children’s favorite images. Brewster, for example, has partnered with Nickelodeon, Harley-Davidson, Barbie and The Bratz.

When young children can help design their own rooms, it’s a personal expression of who they are, according to Berberian.
