Ladder Safety: Using the Three-Point Climb

CHICAGO-Ladders are extremely beneficial for cleaning and decorating hard to reach areas. However, it is important to think about your technique before starting to climb any ladder, no matter what the circumstances are.
“It’s important to always climb with safety in mind,” said Tom Greco, president of the American Ladder Institute (ALI).
One sure-fire way to ensure safe climbing is by utilizing the three-point climb.
Followed correctly, this method ensures the climber’s body is securely anchored to the ladder at all times by creating three separate points of contact with the ladder.
How to use the three-point climb:
1. At shoulder level, grasp one rung of the ladder tightly with your right hand, while using your left hand to grasp the next rung up.
2. Step onto the lowest rung of the ladder with your left foot, which then establishes three separate points of contact (two hands and one foot).
3. Continue climbing, alternating your hands and feet to maintain three points of contact with the ladder.
The American Ladder Institute was founded in 1947 and represents North American ladder manufacturers and is committed to the highest standards of ladder safety. ALI's mission is to educate the public as to the selection, care, and safe use of ladders and develop and disseminate the appropriate standards for design, construction, testing, care and use of ladders.
