(FULLERTON, CA) When AirTran Airways recently became the first commercial air carrier to offer onboard XM Satellite Radio, the occasion called for suitable fanfare. After all, the Orlando-based airline was showcasing the innovative news and entertainment service that also happens to have as its spokesperson a legendary performing artist with a hit song aptly titled “Answer in the Sky”, Elton John. A plan took shape to promote the venture by applying huge graphics of Elton and the XM Satellite Radio logo to the exterior of select planes in the AirTran fleet.

PAC MIN was brought into the design process early, and its scale model of the decorated B717s would become integral to the campaign’s success. The Fullerton-based company is a world leader in providing marketing solutions to the aviation industry, and its high-quality scale models are vital engineering, design and marketing resources. In this case, the design team was able to see how the finished planes would look by checking their design in 1/100th scale.

In February, the specially decorated AirTran B717s were put into service. The corresponding launch event and press conference featured PAC MIN’s scale model, which the entertainer autographed during a live appearance.
