ISO 8601 Week Calendar now supported by "Easy Date Converter" software

January 15, 2007 (PRLEAP.COM) Business News
Hermetic Systems has released a new version of its Easy Date Converter software which supports the ISO 8601 Week Calendar. This calendar has years which coincide fairly closely with years in the Gregorian Calendar in common use but the years consist of an integral number of weeks, either 52 or 53. Thus this calendar is often used by businesses and other organizations which schedule activities, receipts, etc., by week and which do not wish to deal with the irregularity of the Gregorian Calendar, in which a year has either 52 weeks and 1 day or 52 weeks and 2 days. With the Gregorian Calendar it's hard to know which day of the week a given year starts on, whereas years in the ISO 8601 Week Calendar always begin on a Monday.

Easy Date Converter performs two basic operations: (i) date arithmetic (adding and subtracting a number of days from a date, and ascertaining the number of days between dates) and (ii) conversion among dates in different calendars (e.g., ISO 8601 Week dates to Gregorian dates). Both operations may be performed with dates in any of the five supported calendars: the Gregorian Calendar, the Julian Calendar, ordinal dates (which are of the form yyyy-ddd, that is, year and day-in-year), Julian day numbers (used by astronomers) and the above-mentioned ISO 8601 Week Calendar. It supports dates in American (12/31/2007), European (31.12.2007) and ISO 8601 (2007-12-31) formats.

The software also has (i) the ability to include or exclude weekend days when counting days between dates and (ii) the ability to perform batch computation (a feature possessed by no other off-the-shelf date arithmetic software).

(i) is especially useful for counting the number of weekdays over a certain period. For example, if you pay someone a certain amount per day, and they work only on weekdays, then how much will you need to budget for their salary each month or in one year?

(ii) is to be used when a large number of date arithmetic operations have to be performed. For example, suppose you have a long list of dates in the ISO 8601 Week Calendar, e.g., 2007-W34-2, and you want to know which dates in the Gregorian Calendar those ISO Week dates correspond to? This software can be used to do a batch conversion to give the corresponding dates.

Easy Date Converter allows display of a whole month in the Gregorian or Julian Calendars and it displays the corresponding dates in the ISO 8601 Week Calendar. The program is bilingual, English and German, and the online user manual is in both languages.
