Handy as an ID Token replaces weak password protection

Heemskerk, 9 February 2007, ID Control, the specialist in advanced online identity and access management today announced their new weapon called “HandyID” in the fight against online identity theft and fraud.

HandyID runs as a security application on your mobile phone and generates dynamic and unique one time passwords, which you can only use it when you know your PIN. With regard to the online identification process HandyID is comparable with the well-known card reader and ATM card combination. HandyID makes it possible when used during online banking to turn your own mobile phone into an ID token which you always carry along anywhere. Without using a reader and a card or a token you can let the HandyID application on your mobile device generate the access or response code in order to be granted permission access to online banking or digital signing of transactions.

Hans Kortekaas, CEO of ID Control, indicates that because of the replacement by HandyID of the traditional challenge-response token for online, network or VPN access and sign-on the costs for distribution, support and purchase of this strong mobile authentication solution become significant lower. He explains that the main reason for using mobile One-Time Password solutions is the transformation of the mobile phone into an ID token that you always carry along with you. Besides that HandyID in combination with the ID Control Server also allows online applications to mutually identify themselves with the user, which is called two-way authentication. Most of the existing identification solutions only let the users identify themselves to the online application which is called one-way authentication. The user puts all his trust on the yellow lock that refers to a server certificate to know were the sensitive or transaction information has been send to.

A lot of organization that operate online, offer their clients, partners, suppliers or employees access to private or sensitive online services and information or let them perform transactions. Controlling the identity and access of the users to systems, networks and applications are ranked high in priority on the list of security measures nowadays. HandyID is an affordable and very user-friendly identification application that is already available for online applications, web based email and other services such as VPN, network and remote desktop access.

ID Control offers a workshop around the interesting subject of the evolution in identity and access management in Heemskerk on the 22nd of February. During this workshop HandyID, ID Control Server and the ID Control USB Key will off course be shown. For this workshop there are still some “seats” available free of charge.
