History Teachers Released De-Bono "Thinking Skills Box"

March 03, 2007 (PRLEAP.COM) Business News
A family of history teachers, disappointed with creative thinking abilities in local primary schools, have released a De-Bono "Thinking Skills Box" to challenge children into becoming better thinkers. The goal is to get children to see familiar objects in an unfamiliar way. Inside the box are six coloured hats, with every colour representing a very different way of thinking. These include, thinking about an object from an emotional perspective, a negative perspective and a factual perspective.

In a parallel to De Bono’s 1985 book "Six Thinking Hats", classes will discuss an object from a single angle of thinking. The benefit, as History People founder Philip Carr explains, is to ensure children develop the ability to ask questions about what they see every day:
"Children are growing up in a society of acceptance, a society where they no longer question what they see, read or hear. The goal of this Thinking Skills Box is to get children asking the important questions. Being able to ask the right questions is more important than the answers." Philip also notes the Thinking Skills Box’s academic value "This box will help them construct future essays throughout their academic lives, and ensure they are able to think different perspectives."

To make a complex management concept fun for primary school children, the History People have included additional audio and visual stimuli inside the box. The Thinking Skills Box also contains PowerPoint CDs for teachers, two dice and their Six Wise Serving Men.
The Thinking Skills Box is a long overdue resource for primary schools struggling to find educational resources which meet both the Creative Curriculum and Cross Curricular learning criteria.

After very positive trials from two Gloucestershire-based schools, the History People will soon be making the Thinking Skills Box available to all UK schools at an introductory offer of £100.
