Ex-President of Colombia and art enthusiast César Gaviria Trujillo opened his own art gallery in Bogotá last week. The gallery, called "nueveochenta" will be run by the art curator Carlos Hurtado.

To the opening event came the elite of Colombian political society - and given that they are not particularly known as art enthusiasts, one would imagine there primary reason for being there was to support their political friend in his new endeavor - or perhaps they were just toeing the party line!

In any case - the new gallery, which has several exphibitions rooms with around a total of 3000 sq feet, was so full that it was impossible to completely appreciate the artworks created by the stable of eight artists that will be internationally promoted by Gaviria and Hurtado. These artists include: Jaime Tarazona, Barbarita Cardoza, Saúl Sánchez, Miller Lagos, Luis Hernández Mellizo, María Isabel Rueda, Natalia Castañeda and Nicolás Consuegra - all colombians.

According to Hurtado these artists were selected because "the good quality of their work transcends the average, it is structured, rigorous and generates dialogue with the spectator". These young artists all have an interesting profile but they still have a long way to go and many hurdles to overcome if their work is to be more greatly appreciated nationally and internationally. However, having a patron like Gaviria will not go unnoticed where it should count most. As such we wish the gallery and the artists well in their future endeavors.
