The Sony NEC Optiarc Inc. joint-venture was established in Ismaningen (Germany), springing from the Sony - NEC Cooperation, forged in April 2006. The new corporation is called Sony NEC Optiarc Europe LLC.

The strategic partnership with Dretschler.com / shoXX.com provides a number of advantages and ensures that new products hit the market much more quickly. For instance, Dretschler.com / shoXX.com was the first online shop to offer the AD-7173A burner. The NEC burner offers 18X DVD burning capability, supporting the DVD-R and DVD+R formats, as well as DVD-RW and DVD+RW, DVD-R DL, DVD RAM at 12X, CD at 48X and LabelFlash which burns images on the top side of a DVD disc.

Also offered under the NEC label, are a lower priced model, the AD-7170A, without LabelFlash but with the same write and read specifications as the AD-7173A, and the ND-5170A which comes without DVD RAM or LabelFish support. All three drives are immediately available online.
