Pubs prove the greatest source of new business

March 10, 2007 — It’s often been said that many new business ideas start in the pub. Now a new survey has revealed that pubs themselves were the most popular type of business to start in 2006. Well over 3,000 new pubs were launched or came under new ownership, according to the research released by www.startupsplus.co.uk, a marketing service for small businesses. This represents an increase of nearly 3% on 2005.

Despite the long hours and sometimes unruly clients, running a pub still seems to hold great appeal for many. Pubs also topped the business start up league tables in 2005.

The next most popular types of new business to start in 2006 were hairdressers, followed by builders, driving schools, and employment agencies. Overall, 2006 saw a massive 10% increase in the number of new businesses starting up - over 125,000 of us took the plunge and became our own boss last year. Some of the biggest increases were seen amongst photographers, which leapt up by 45% in 2006, followed by hairdressers and ladies clothes shops.
