LINCOLN, Mass. — A new author has detailed the life and story of the man behind New Hampshire’s controversial state motto, “Live Free or Die.”

Ben Z. Rose’s release of “John Stark: Maverick General” comes at an interesting time. The state legislature is currently debating whether or not the influential battlefield commander’s 200-year-old adage should remain on residents’ license plates. That same group will also soon determine if Barry Palmer’s song, “Live Free or Die,” will become the state’s official anthem.

In the book, which was released this month by TreeLine Press, Rose introduces readers to the man who inspired the phrase “Live Free or Die: Death is not the greatest of evils” in a letter to the citizens of Vermont during an 1809 Battle of Bennington reunion. Rose argues that General John Stark’s role in the Battle of Bennington turned the tide of the American Revolution.

“I see this as a modern interpretation of Stark,” said Rose about his book. “I think he is often overlooked by historians … staunchly independent and deeply suspicious of authority, General Stark disdained politics, and was something of a renegade, even among his friends.”

Stark was a nonconformist who led New England militia in unconventional combat during the Battle of Bennington and the Battle of Bunker Hill. His knowledge of British military methods from his early days as a member in the colonial British militia group, Rogers Rangers, would allow his soldiers to prevail in these key battles, ultimately leading to America’s independence.

In an age where the pendulum swings between concerns over the intrusion of government in our daily lives and fear of foreign enemies, Stark’s words have the same relevance today as they did 200 years ago. And while statesmen, diplomats, politicians and pamphleteers all played an important role in the American Revolution, Rose claims that independence could never have been achieved without the decisive leadership of generals like John Stark.

“John Stark: Maverick General” is being launched through Memorial Day 2007 to provide educational opportunities for those interested in learning more about Stark. Rose will be speaking at various bookstores and historical organizations throughout New England. The book, which is available through independent bookstores, is also available at Amazon.com.
