CompuLaw Issued Australian Patent for Court Rules Engine

April 20, 2007 (PRLEAP.COM) Business News
LOS ANGELES – April 20, 2007 – CompuLaw LLC, publisher of calendar/docket software with built-in court rules databases, has received notice of acceptance for its Engine Applications patent from the Australian Government. Notice of acceptance for serial No. 2002330911 has been issued for “Method and Apparatus for Management of Court Schedules.” CompuLaw pursued the patent in Australia because the legal systems in both countries are similar and because the patent supports an important opportunity for future growth plans. This patent enables the company to provide valuable products and services to Australian legal companies and American corporations that conduct business abroad.

The patent process in Australia is known to be rigorous. The patent was granted due to technology that includes methods for accurately calculating dates or different legal events that can occur in the course of a legal proceeding. Furthermore, this patented court rules engine employs various automatic date adjustment methods to ensure accurate deadlines are consistently calculated.

The Australian patent comes shortly after CompuLaw received a Notice of Allowance and Fees Due from the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for a similar patent application.

Alex Manners, Vice President of Legal Rules Products for CompuLaw LLC, states, “We offer a unique court rules engine that is an integral part of CompuLaw’s award-winning products, including Vision™ and Deadlines On Demand (DOD), our online calendaring service. Acceptance of our patent application by the USPTO and now the Australian Government positions us to service Australian legal companies and global American corporations. As the company has experienced its best year in history, we will continue to expand our scope and services in order to continue to be a leader in the field.”

Over the past 28 years, CompuLaw has developed the most accurate rules calculation software available; the patented engine was first made available online in late 2004. According to the American Bar Association, calendaring and deadline-related errors are the leading cause of malpractice claims against attorneys and firms. CompuLaw’s products are specifically designed to help firms reduce these risks while increasing productivity and profitability.

CompuLaw’s trusted calendar/docket software is currently used by over 70% of the top 50 law firms in California and over 60% of the AmLaw Top 50 law firms. In addition to being named #1 in the AmLaw Tech survey, Vision was also recognized as the #1 Docketing Solution for the fifth year in a row in the International Legal Technology Association (ILTA) 2006 Technology Usage Survey.

Since the 1980s, CompuLaw has maintained a reputation for publishing the most accurate and complete rules databases available. CompuLaw's rules databases, along with its patented court rules engines, are used with confidence by thousands of law firms throughout North America.

CompuLaw’s software enables attorneys to automatically schedule critical dates in accordance with court rules, greatly reducing the possibility of missing deadlines through error-prone and time-consuming manual docket calculations. CompuLaw offers rules databases for approximately 1,500 jurisdictions nationwide, for use with its engine products. During 2006, CompuLaw released 194 new rules and sent 255 rules updates for numerous jurisdictions across the United States.
