The Kanbay Research Institute (KRI), an independent, non-incorporated operating unit of Capgemini, initiated coverage on Comcast (CMCSA) as part of their competitive ratings of the Communication and Media industry. The KRI standardized system measures how well a company is building durable advantage and provides overall and detailed ratings across nine competitive moats by analyzing consumer responses. In 2005 Comcast scored a 4M rating in the economies of skill moat. 2006 ratings show that Comcast has dropped to a 1M. A 5M is the most competitive rating possible.

Comcast is the largest cable company with capacity to grow twice its size. Size may give the company a slight advantage in acquiring content and ability to negotiate programming fees with content providers, yet, consumers don’t see any competitive advantage for the company. Comcast is included in the KRI’s annual industry study, Communications Demand Today. In the 2006 study, KRI conducted 1,545 interviews with U.S. consumers to rate 31 companies.
