Do you have ‘the download factor’?

UK download music site invents new chart

OK, so the official download chart may now be part of the Top 40, but that won’t stop Westlife squatting at the top of the charts or record companies hyping acts up the ladder faster than you can say ‘rigging’.

UK download site http://www.intomusic.co.uk/ has devised a new chart which will accurately determine the ‘download factor’ of the cream of new music downloads on the web.

The ‘download factor’ program from www.intomusic.co.uk works out what percentage of people hearing 60-second previews of tracks then go on to download the music. A higher percentage gets the artists a higher ranking in the chart. This is great news for new or lesser-known acts being heard for the first time. To avoid any chart rigging, the mp3 downloads and plays for each individual user per song, are only counted once.

London band Boxing climbed to the top of the with a download factor of 81 per cent. Reggae dancehall veteran Turtle Man ranks 3rd with a factor of 78 per cent. The search can also be refined further by download factor for genre and sub-genre.

All the new music on the site is initially shown first, thus giving each song a fair chance to be heard. Intomusic promotes independent music from artists releasing their own music through small labels and has worked closely on a number of up and coming UK bands. “We are especially interested in getting involved with more independent labels, and with our dominance on the search engines and our focus on niche music it could be just what’s needed to provide a UK alternative to the US-led Napster and iTunes music stores.”
