"The problem is that many managers and mid-managers tend to only criticize and punish," noted Dr. Calmas. He continued, "This creates an environment of fear and establishes a communication barrier. Staffers become defensive, then productivity and creativity gets stifled. Employee turnover becomes
the norm."

He concluded, "Like athletes, business people need coaching to achieve" greater success. Athletes want to be coached to become winners. Executives, entrepreneurs and managers resist being coached and in turn, do not understand how to coach their staff who are looking for ways to excel at their jobs, to work up to their potential and to remove the obstacles to their success."

Dr. Calmas has worked with a broad range of clients, including New York Life, Merrill Lynch, Mazonson and Oppenheimer. He has developed programs for increasing productivity, reducing employee turnover and resolving conflicts between staff members.
