Paperbag Theatre Starting Something New In Bible Storytelling

May 2007 - Paperbag Theatre, created by Motorwood Entertainment, is everything but typical. Their new release, The Boy Who Faced His Giant, through Madacy Entertainment, is a fun way to kick start your child’s imagination and share the story of David and Goliath.

The Boy Who Faced His Giant is about a young bag named David who must face the dreaded rope climbing test in gym class. After a strange encounter with the weird school janitor Mr. Squint, a prayer for God to burn the school down, and a nightmare to make David take the prayer back, the young bag seeks some advice from dear old Dad. David doesn’t just get advice though, he gets an adventure as Dad retells the story of David and Goliath to drive home the point that it’s not about climbing to the top, but it’s about choosing to climb.

The creators of Paperbag Theatre are like their creation – odd, but kooky and fun to have around. Ric Viers and Gary Allison have been working in the film industry for a combined 20+ years. They’ve worked with such stars as Eminem, Kid Rock, and KISS. They’ve traveled the world as cameramen and sound recordists, getting to know the business and its people. Both attended Christian universities studying theology, but ministry was not their passion, filmmaking was. Viers started The Detroit Chop Shop, a premier post-production house in the Detroit area and the world’s largest producer of sound effects for the motion picture industry. Allison spent time writing commercials for television and radio. After a request from The American Cancer Society for a child friendly production that gives hope to young cancer survivors and their family members, Viers and Allison wrote and produced The Boy Who Faced His Giant. Soon after, they were picked up by Madacy Entertainment and released in all major retail stores in North America and on the web.

Controversy hasn’t been far behind Paperbag Theatre. Seen as a twisted view of cherished Bible stories, the Right side of the pew has tended to ignore these filmmakers. Then there’s the Left side of the pew that has commented on the perceived superior mantra that Viers and Allison express. However, nothing could be further from the truth for these two. All they’ve ever wanted to do was make people laugh and sometimes sacred cows are shaven and paraded around to do so.
