123-reg offers Ubuntu on dedicated servers

First major web host to offer Ubuntu free to Linux users.

Pipex’s domain name registration and hosting company, 123-reg is making it even easier for customers to set up and run a Linux server by offering the Ubuntu distribution system as standard on its Linux dedicated servers. 123-reg is the UK’s first major web host to make the operating system available for free, providing customers with an easy way of setting up and maintaining their own server.

Ubuntu is one of the world’s fastest growing operating systems, with an estimated 8 million users worldwide on desktops and servers. 123-reg customers will be able to access Ubuntu freely, with security updates for five years on servers, no requirement to purchase subscriptions per deployment, and no restrictions on usage.

Ubuntu, a complete Linux-based operating system based on Debian GNU/Linux, was selected due to its reputation for stability, usability and ease of installation. This version, Ubuntu 6.06 LTS, will be supported until 2011 with regular updates, reassuring 123-reg customers that their websites have a secure future.

“We’re pleased to be one of the first web hosts to offer Ubuntu as its Linux operating system of choice,” says Mark Beyer, sales and marketing director, Pipex SME Hosting. “We spoke to our customers about which operating system they wanted on our dedicated servers, and Ubuntu was a name that kept coming up. It’s robust and easy to use, which fits closely into our values of providing good value, yet high performance, web hosting.”
