Free Legal Update for Property Landlords

A Cumbria law firm is hosting a free legal update for the county’s growing number of property landlords. Burnetts in Carlisle will be holding the event in the library of their Victoria Street offices on 13th June. Landlords can come along at either 12.30pm – 2.30pm or 4.30pm – 6.30pm. A light buffet will be provided at both sessions. Pre booking is essential.

The Landlords’ Legal Updates are being held in response to growing legislation around buying and renting property and an increasing number of buy-to-let investors. The sessions will cover the legal basics of being a landlord, as well advice on the Tenants’ Deposit Scheme, fire safety regulations and evictions. Speakers include Head of Conveyancing Mike Wood, Commercial Property Associate James Stables and Managing Partner Tom Leach.

Tom said, “At one time, renting out a property was pretty straightforward with very few regulations, but over the last two years, there has been an increasing level of legislation and a growing number of new people coming into the buy-to-let sector. This session aims to bring new and experienced landlords up-to-date on critical laws affecting fire safety and confusing areas like the Tenants Deposit Scheme.”

Earlier this year, the Council of Mortgage Lenders reported that there had been a 48% increase in the number of buy-to-let mortgages since 2005. A study by Birmingham Midshires also predicted that the buy-to-let market will continue to grow in 2007.
