UK Charity condemns G8 meddling in Africa

WORLDwrite, based in London E5, is hosting a G8 Uncovered event to coincide with the G8 summit in Heiligendamm in Germany and aims to scrutinise the G8’s agenda for Africa.

Director Ceri Dingle said today: “The leaders of the world's most powerful countries meet again for this G8 summit, and under the heading ‘Growth and responsibility’ they are promising even more interference for the poorest countries on earth. The double accounting of debt relief as aid is well known, but the really insidious aspect of G8 plans is their so called “pro-poor” focus and attempts to stop further borrowing from China. WORLDwrite is committed to ensuring that the truth gets told.”

At the G8 Uncovered event, a screening of the critical short film Damned by Debt Relief, shot in Ghana, will be followed by an interrogation of prevailing myths by a panel of experts: Daniel Ben-Ami, journalist, economist and author of Cowardly Capitalism; Philip Cunliffe, researcher and author of Politics Without Sovereignty; and Stuart Simpson, economist and author of Damn lies and debt relief.

A studio audience will join the fray and the event will be filmed for broadcast on the web.

The G8 Uncovered event will take place on:
Thursday June 7th at 7:30pm
The WORLDwrite Centre
Millfields Lodge
201 Millfields Road
London E5 0AL

Doors open from 6pm onwards with stalls. Entry is free.
Additional cameras welcome. Refreshments available.

Film Details
Shot in Ghana, Damned by Debt Relief provides a stark reminder of the devastating conditions attached to debt relief following the G8 Gleneagles deal in 2005, not least the denial of autonomy, degradation of democracy and low horizons enshrined in so called "poverty reduction" strategies. Released for the 50th anniversary of Ghana’s independence from British colonial rule, the film puts real freedom, independence and serious development on the map.
The film is available on the WORLDwrite website
