Caravanners Told To Watch Their Weight!

June 09, 2007 (PRLEAP.COM) Business News
Leading caravan insurers Cover4Caravans has given its seal of approval to Lancashire County Council’s newest initiative for improving road safety. The Council’s Trading Standards department has unveiled a new mobile weight bridge for use by caravanners and others towing heavy loads in the county.

The weight bridge is designed to alert caravanners to how safely they have loaded their caravans, so that excess weight which may make the vehicle unstable can be removed.

Excess weight when towing a load can cause a hazard for other road users so is an important part of road safety education and awareness. Simply seeing a vehicle towing a heavy load can distract other drivers, with nearly one quarter of them drifting out of their own lanes as a result.

Richard Burgess, director of Cover4Caravans says, “Road safety is of paramount importance especially as nearly one quarter of all drivers tow an object at some point, whether a caravan, boat or trailer. An accident involving a caravan can be especially problematic, leaving the owner with an excessive cost burden if they are not covered by adequate insurance.”

Insuring and correctly loading caravans are not the only practicalities to consider. Cover4Caravans also has some useful advice for drivers towing caravans to ensure that they stay on the right side of the law throughout their journey; “Remember that when towing, your vehicle’s registration number should always be visible to other drivers, affixed to the back of the towed object if necessary. Also, the legal speed limit on the motorway for towing caravans is reduced to 60mph and when towing it is illegal to use the outside lane.”
