Los Angeles, California, June 2007 – During the celebration of Memorial Day, the Social Security Administration expressed its tribute to the valiant heroes of America’s military service members and mourned the tragic losses caused by the war. To manifest their deep salutation, the Social Security Commissioner, Michael J. Astrue made an announcement directed to the active military duty personnel and their families. The announcement’s focal point is Social Security’s imposition of procedures that will accelerate the processing of applications for survivor benefits and disability claims by the military service members.

Astrue wanted to let the military personnel on active duty and their families to be aware of the Social Security’s scheme for immediate processing of disability claims and survivor’s benefits. This will enable active military service members to file claims for injuries and/or disabilities, quickly, without regards of the location where the injuries were incurred.

In the announcement, Astrue indicated that he wanted to guarantee the brave members of America’s Armed Forces, whether women or men, along with their families that they do not have to wait for the benefits they need and deserve.

This special attention being given to military personnel is but one way wherein the Social Security can manifest its appreciation of all the members of the Armed Forces’ selfless dedication to the country. The appreciation and high regard is also extended to military personnel’s families.

The quick and direct process of application for benefits already takes effect and applicable for military members who have been disabled during the line of duty without regard of the place where it took place, on October 1, 2001 or after this date.

Astrue assures more information and answers for inquiries for those who have not caught up with their new scheme, by calling up the Social Security’s toll free number.
