Foster Care Volunteers Raise Money for Summer Camp Activities

ARCADIA, CA)—Sponsoring this year’s Bartlett Cup, Hillsides Guild raised over $2,000 for summer camp activities for foster care children at Hillsides, a Pasadena charity. Adding Bunco to the line up of activities guests could participate in, Guild volunteers also offered the traditional tennis and bridge tournaments.

"Hillsides summer camp starts the day the school year is over from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Staff keeps the children and youth challenged throughout the summer with activities that help them relax, refresh and heal," said Nancy Garni, director of development. "And that’s what you’ve helped Hillsides do with your support at the Bartlett Cup."

Tennis players participated in a round robin competition at the Santa Anita County Tennis Courts in Arcadia. While Guild guests played bridge and bunco at the Arcadia home of Anita Peralaz, followed by a savory lunch catered by Kim’s Katering also in Arcadia.

Handing over the reigns of the annual Bartlett Cup to the Hillsides Guild, Sylvia Bartlett, founder of the event twenty years ago, supported the event by visiting with longtime guests during the luncheon.

Vying for the coveted Bartlett Cup prizes, tennis tournament first place A team winner was Denise Swanstrom of Studio City and B Team winner was Marty Pepping of Sierra Madre. Tying for second place were A team players Debbie Sierra of Pasadena and Andrea Baltzell of Sherman Oaks and B team players Mary Webster of Arcadia and Eleanor Struzenacker of South Pasadena. Strategizing against other participants were bridge tournament winners and Arcadia residents Barara Vann, first place; Marilyn Stephenson, second place; Kay Malloy, third place; and Hilda Murachanian, fourth place. Bunco lucky winners were Pasadena resident Cathy Sedlik, first place; Arcadia resident Laura Kelso, second place; Pasdena resident Carole DePaul, third place; and Arcadia resident Nancy Utley, fourth place.
