ARIES ELECTRONICS ADDS DISPLAY SOCKETS TO ITS INCREASING NUMBER OF ROHS-COMPLIANT COMPONENTS

FRENCHTOWN, N.J., June 2007 — Aries Electronics, an international manufacturer of standard, programmed and custom interconnection products, has now made its complete line of Vertisocket™ display sockets RoHS compliant. The sockets can be used for applications such as DIP packaging of LEDs, incandescent lamps and DIP switches.

The RoHS-compliant Vertisockets provide exceptional design freedom with their variety of mounting positions and pin configurations. These sockets are either at an angle or at an elevated height to bring a display out to the window of the user’s finished product. The Vertisockets are available in two types: with stamped informed pins (either horizontally or vertically mounted) or with collet contacts.

The sockets with collet contacts have a 3-amp contact current rating and accept leads that are 0.015” to 0.025” in diameter and 0.110” to 0.150” long. The four-fingered collet contacts are heat-treated beryllium copper alloy, and the contact plating is 30 µ” min. (0.76 µm) gold per Mil-G-45204 over 50 µ” min. (1.27 µm) nickel per SAE-AMS-QQ-N-290. These sockets have an insertion force of 180 grams per pin, a withdrawal force of 90 grams per pin and a normal force of 140 grams per pin.

In comparison, those with stamped informed pins, or bifurcated contacts, have an average insertion force and withdrawal force of 110 grams per pin and 75 grams per pin, respectively. The contacts are Grade A spring-tempered phosphor bronze per QQ-B-750 and the standard contact plating is 50 µ” min. (1.27 µm) matte tin per ASTM B545-97 over 50 µ” min. (1.27 µm) nickel per QQ-N-290. These sockets have a contact current rating of
1 amp and accept flat leads up to 0.14” thick and 0.020” wide and round leads up to 0.020” in diameter.

Aries will continue to offer the standard non-RoHS compliant version of these sockets for customers who require tin/lead plating. All Aries’ test sockets are available in custom materials, platings, sizes and configurations to suit specific customer applications.
