Translation on the rise despite Government reaction

Despite the Governments recent knee jerk reaction to the use of translation and interpreting, Applied Language Solutions reports an increase in the need for language services. Applied Language Solutions, a Yorkshire based Translation and Interpreting company, reports that despite the recent reaction of Communities Secretary Ruth Kelly that such services should be cut, the need for language services is growing at a vast rate.

Gavin Wheeldon, Chief Executive of Applied Language, said “We’re seeing a huge rise in requests for both translation and interpreting. These requests are coming from all sectors of business and the public sector and are driven by the globalisation of the economy, through export trade as well as migrant workers and tourists.”

Despite the Government’s reaction the calls from the Public Sector are growing particularly in the NHS where Applied Language has recently won contracts to supply language solutions to over 60 NHS Trusts.

“The NHS Trusts we’re working with have clubbed together to make a collective deal which means that they can appreciate huge costs savings. This means that they can save up to 70% of the cost they used to have to shoulder each year. If this was applied across all Government the estimated spend would drop from £500 million each year to £150 million. How many police, nurses and other vital services could that provide?”

“The UK cannot isolate itself from the rest of the world but this seems to be what the Government is intent on. As recently as last week the Education Department decided to make foreign language classes non-compulsory at Key-Stage 3, which means that very soon the UK will have no language skills remaining.”

Gavin continued “Due to the rising need for translation and interpreting we are looking for more and more translators and interpreters all the time. As a result of the increased requirement, these skills are in short supply and as the language industry is worth over £16 billion world wide, this will be yet another industry that the UK will lose to emerging countries like China. Our website, www.talkbase.net, is built specifically for translators and interpreters to register their details online and is one of the busiest in the industry. But we’re still looking for more and more people as the requests grow.”

Applied Language Solutions translate all kinds of documents from simple letters to large technical documents for specialist Medical, Legal, Financial and Marketing organisations, including whole websites and printed catalogues.

They use only professional in-country translators and interpreters. They have over 8,000 on their books. These translators work in over 150 languages including all the major European, Asian, African, Middle Eastern and American languages.
