"Savvy business executives must carefully decide whether it's even worth investing in search engine optimization for their websites," said Frank Vitetta, founder of Wordsfinder.

"In some cases, there may not be many searches. However, marketers often are surprised to learn about the myriad ways people look for what they sell," Frank said.

Other Internet keyword research tools have a number of shortcomings. For example, some have inflated data that reflects many advertisers' inquiries. Others have limited data that doesn't fully reflect what's happening in an industry, Frank said.
