“Susan is such a bright, dynamic woman – so knowledgeable about so many subjects and so talented,” Celia Dunn said. “I think it will be a lot of fun to hear about the Southern cottage. She relates well to her audience and she knows how to get everyone interested and involved.”

Sully’s lecture, accompanied by beautiful illustrations from the book, will explore the variety of architectural styles found in Southern country homes, from center hall cottages to chinked log cabins, from Southern vernacular types to shingle style homes. Houses from the beaches of Florida, Georgia, North and South Carolina will be contrasted with country retreats in Virginia, North and South Carolina. Her lecture will demonstrate the many different styles and moods of the interiors of Southern cottages, from the elegant to the rustic, from old-fashioned charm to contemporary verve. Two cottages from Tybee Island are included, as well cottages from nearby beaches in Florida and Charleston.< /SPAN>

“While I was working on this book, I spent a year rambling (and sometimes racing) around the South, tracking down beach and mountain houses that reflect the way Southerners live when they relax: gathering on porches, seeking the solitude of a hammock or garden, and surrounding ourselves with the things we love, whether family antiques or shells just washed up on the sand,” Sully said. “This book is getting a HUGE response – it was featured in Better Homes and Gardens (July), The Chicago Tribune, and The Philadelphia Inquirer. I think that is a fine tribute to how utterly charming and delightful our Southern way of life is!”
