Sophisticated Tulum boutique hotel serves up stylish beach vacations

TULUM, Riviera Maya (June 11, 2005) – A fresh alternative has presented itself on the Caribbean white powder beaches of Tulum, along Mexico’s fast-growing Mayan Riviera. Mezzanine (www.mezzanine.com.mx), an intimate boutique hotel with a hip DJ lounge and pan-Asian-meets-casual-beach-cuisine has broken on the scene offering cool beats and hot fiestas, bringing an excitingly modern, Euro-chic vibe to a quiet Tulum.

The innovative idea behind Mezzanine was conceived by New Zealander Brendon Leach and his Australian brother-in-law John Kendall, when Kendall stumbled upon a dilapidated old beach property with his family several years ago. The two men decided the opportunity was ripe for creating the chilled, funky beach environment Leach had searched for in his world travels. With that vision in mind, Leach and partner Kattrina Taylor relocated in the winter of 2003 and began building their dream, which opened doors in Nov. 2004 after nine months of construction.

“With staggered terraces and mezzanine lounges in both the hotel rooms and the restaurant, the name Mezzanine found itself.” explains Kattrina Taylor. “We are offering a relaxed vibe in stunning surroundings for those who appreciate great food, great cocktails, and bit of style.”

The result is a clean, contemporary design that exudes cutting-edge cool and rustic elegance the moment you step inside the doors. Four stylish suites with minimalist designs overlook a sweeping stretch of pure white sands and beyond that, the aquamarine waters of the Caribbean Sea. Rooms feature large original art pieces hanging over Queen size platform beds, which are covered with bold colors and throw pillows. A wooden spiral staircase in each suite leads to a chill out loft area with a futon pull out couch offering views over the jungle. Bathrooms feature soothing rain showers, Italian design taps and fixtures, natural stone basins sitting atop hand crafted wood tables and fluffy bath towels.

The restaurant menu is an eclectic and saucy mix of café style beach fare, an “all day breakfast”, snack menu and authentic Thai cuisine (the chef is from Thailand), served on a wide terrace under breezy sail shades or inside the dining room that exudes a warm, intimate, oriental feel. A cenote-style plunge pool has a central location, surrounded by low natural tree trunk tables on grass mats and retro bean bag chairs, where guests sip crisp cocktails – martinis, margaritas, mojitos, caipirinas and tequila from the beach bar.

Mezzanine is designed to maximize socializing, which is eased by an undercurrent of the latest house beats, smooth grooves and world lounge that flows from the sound system. Stylish sophistication reaches its epitome with Mezzanine’s legendary Friday night “Fiestas en la Playa”, featuring the live mixes of guest DJs from Ibiza, London and Europe. During the summer months, movies under the stars play on the terrace and in winter months, a lofty lounge area above the restaurant – with a billiards table and several couches – serves as the screening pad for recent flicks.
