On Friday, September 21 at 2 p.m., Kent Station will award two Green River Community College scholarships totaling $3,800 to recent Kent high school graduates. The needs-based scholarships will be awarded as a follow-up to Kent Station’s spring Dollars for Kent Scholars promotion where the urban village/shopping center donated $1 for each postcard completed by restaurant patrons. Held during the month of March, the promotion was co-sponsored by Centex Homes. The fundraiser will become an annual event to support local area high school students who could not afford college without financial assistance.

Cheered on by their families, city officials, Green River Community College and Tarragon Development representatives, high school principals, staff, and teachers, the scholarship winners will receive their awards in a 2 p.m. ceremony at the Kent Station Fountain Stage in front of AMC Theatres. The recipients for the inaugural Kent Station Scholarship are Munira Farah, a 2007 graduate of Kentlake High School, and Svetlana Kurkov, a 2005 graduate of Kent Meridian High School.

Emigrating from Somalia, Munira comes from a family of six children and is a single mom herself. During her senior year at Kentlake High School, Farah started at Green River Community College (GRCC) as a Running Start student. She hopes to become a lawyer.

Also from a large family, Kurkov is pursuing an associate degree in business and wants to work in an office or school setting where she can help people and utilize her office management skills. Kurkov currently maintains a 3.5 grade point average at GRCC.

Both women are excellent students with compelling stories of overcoming challenges and adversity to reach their future goals. In addition, Farah and Kurkov represent the growing and diverse community that comprises Kent. Kent Station invites you to join the women September 21 to celebrate their achievements.

“On behalf of the entire community, we are honored to be able to offer these scholarships to Munira and Svetlana,” Kent Station’s General Manager John Hinds said. “We are proud to be partners with Green River Community College and glad we can contribute in some way to the academic success of these exceptional students.”
