From its founding in 1718 by Father Antonio de San Buenaventura y Olivares, San Antonio has been an integral part of the fabric of United States’ history. The story of the “River City” reflects both a diverse and progressive spirit, and a unique culture that is the foundation of the city’s present-day prosperity.

With fact-filled photo captions and chapter introductions by author Frank S. Faulkner, Jr., Historic Photos of San Antonio rediscovers the fascinating past of the “Alamo City” through nearly 200 rare photographs culled from the archives of Library of Congress, the Texana/Genealogy Department of the San Antonio Public Library and the Institute of Texan Cultures at the University of Texas- San Antonio, all of which are showcased with exceptional clarity and beauty.

In scenes of events from Hot Sulphur Wells to Fort Sam Houston, landmarks to lawmen, cattle drives to Commerce Street, and much more, San Antonio shines through the decades in glorious black-and-white photography, displayed in a large format.

“I’ve always been interested in history,” explains librarian author Frank S. Faulkner, Jr., “and these photographs remind us that San Antonio’s past is more than the Alamo and very little of its past has really been studied. There is a need to preserve and re-develop much of our structural heritage and local neighborhoods.”

Historic Photos of San Antonio is part of Turner Publishing’s Historic Photos series. These books, highlighting the history of the great cities across America, have been acclaimed as a staple in the collection of anyone who loves history.
