ROYAL PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY – MEMBER CASE STUDY BRIAN GRIFFIN HonFRPS

Of the Royal Photographic Society’s 9,700 members (www.rps.org) they are proud to count Brian Griffin as one of them. The Society’s decision to award Brian with an Honorary Fellowship last year is some indication of the talent and vision this celebrated photographer has contributed to photography worldwide.

Born in Birmingham and having studied photography at Manchester Polytechnic School of Photography, Brian has had a profound effect on the medium in the last 30 years. Described by the British Journal of Photography as “the most unpredictable and influential British portrait photographer of the last three decades” and attributed by the Sunday Times Magazine of having the ability to carry out a “a magical metamorphosis of politicians, designers, singers, rugby players with his camera” his vision and ability have led him to become involved in some of the most prolific and well visited photography exhibitions of recent years. From Birmingham to Barcelona via Reykjavik his unique style has seen him commissioned by some of the world’s top brands, publications and celebrities to photograph on their behalf, and his pictures for Management Today, showing businessmen in their environment, redefined British portraiture.


The respect that he has earned throughout his career has led him to be invited to document and create what is being hailed as the most substantial corporate book of photographs since the Great Exhibition of 1851 – Teamphoto: portraits of the people who built Britain’s first high speed railway, which celebrates the unique development of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link from St Pancras.

The construction of the rail link has taken nine years to construct, with 8,000 people working over 50 million hours to build it. It has delivered over 100km of new high-speed railway, the world’s longest high-speed rail bridge, 43 km of cutting edge tunnels, and in St Pancras International, has quite possibly created the 8th wonder of the world. Brian has been working with LCR on High Speed One since 2004 and has made 165 portraits of the workers and managers involved in the project.

Ralph Jacobson, President of the Royal Photographic Society, recognises Brian’s significant contribution to the Society saying “The Royal Photographic Society is very pleased with our association with Brian Griffin whose work was recognised with an Honorary Fellowship presented at the 2006 Awards Ceremony. The Society is also very grateful for Brian’s continuing support of its work as an educational charity through him finding time in his busy schedule to give talks on his work for the benefit of our members and the world of photography in general We all very much look forward to seeing his latest portraits which sound fantastic.”

Brian has always enjoyed and benefited from his membership to the RPS - the foremost photographic society in the world - and is pleased that with his success as a photographer he is now able to reciprocate the support the Society afforded him when he first joined X years ago. "Being an Honorary Fellow of the RPS offers me such a wonderful opportunity to publicly portray my enthusiasm for photography and it is wonderful to be able to help promote what they do through the various projects I am involved in ."
