On Friday, September 14, 2007, Self Defense instructor and retired Corrections Officer (CO) Julio Anta conducted a Women’s Personal Protection Workshop at the Corrections USA (CUSA) Fall Conference in Detroit, Michigan. CUSA whose motto is “Keeping America’s Communities Safe” and Anta share a common goal. They want to empower law bidding citizens especially women and children to protect themselves and to be able to survive a violent confrontation.

Corrections Officer and CUSA Chairman Captain James T. Baiardi approached Anta with the concept of introducing members of CUSA from across the nation to a women and children’s personal protection program that could tour the continental USA in an effort to keep citizens safe from crime. Corrections Officer’s throughout the country are keeping our citizens safe by keeping incarcerated and supervising the criminal population in our Nations jails and prisons. Our Nations prisons have become like a revolving door with the high rate of convicts returning to prison. With the raising crime rate in our nation CUSA believes that the most positive and effective way to keep America’s communities safe is by teaching and educating the public on how to protect themselves through reality based street defense and awareness. Cusa believes that the best candidate for this endeavor is Julio Anta who had served 10 years at South Florida Reception Center a maximum security state prison. Anta is a Kung Fu Master, a certified Haganah F.I.G.H.T. Israeli Self Defense instructor and an honorably discharged US Marine Corps Sergeant who has conducted numerous personal protection and child safety workshops. Anta’s course not only teaches you the physical aspects of surviving and fleeing a criminal attack but also the body language and physiological aspect that will help you survive in the streets.

Anta’s course is unique teaching women and children what a criminal looks for in their victims. He teaches attacks to vital points of the body followed by an escape plan. He teaches scenario based physical and non-physical defense by bringing their adrenaline up just like it would occur on the street. Anta says “Our classes are for law bidding citizens that want to defy the odds and not be victims of crime.” He does not teach high kicks and fancy moves he teaches them how to survive. He says that the only trophy that you win in the streets is your life.

Corrections U.S.A. (CUSA) is a not-for-profit corporation formed by correctional officers in 1998 to provide national representation to correctional officers employed by federal, state and local governments. They represent over 80,000 publicly employed correctional officers from across this nation.

CUSA educates the public, media, and elected officials, advocates for change, and provides a network of information on corrections. They work hard to improve the image of their profession and the lives and working conditions of correctional officers nationwide. Corrections Officers walk the toughest beat in the nation with the dignity, courage, commitment, and dedication necessary to keep the public safe from the criminal element.

Anta a retired CO and Self Defense expert fits right in with CUSA’s vision on protecting the community. For more information please call 305 599-3649 or e-mail fitdef@aol.com.
