Fitness fanatic trades in tracksuit for apron

Kay Thompson was used to running on the treadmill inside gyms, now she’s busy running a restaurant! Having swapped her tracksuit for an apron, the 26-year-old has lunched into the new challenge with relish. The restaurant in question is at Esporta Health Club Sheffield; recently refurbished as part of an overall club redevelopment, Esporta’s restaurant now has a more modern and stylish look with new menus and Kay at the helm.

Kay moved to Sheffield a year ago, after spending a year in Australia working as a fitness trainer. Kay joined Esporta as fitness supervisor, and has now climbed the ladder by taking up the job of restaurant manager at Sheffield’s premier health club. She has a passion for sport but loves her food too, and has set about introducing a range of new specials to the menu, like mouth-watering chicken fajitas.

“The restaurant was 10 years old, so it really needed a revamp. We put in leather sofas, and generally made it look more sophisticated and brought it up to date. The menu has been expanded as well,” says Kay. “We have been fully open only a few days, but the restaurant has already attracted a great deal of attention. There have been some tremendously positive comments, which is nice. My aim is to raise the profile of the restaurant at Esporta and make sure members are using it and enjoying it to its full potential.”

Fitness fanatic Kay grew up in a hotel in Berwick-upon-Tweed, north of Newcastle, where she spent 13 years of her life. So she is no stranger to the ins and outs of managing a restaurant.

Kay adds: “My previous hotel experience is of course an advantage, as is the fact that I already know and understand Esporta’s customers. As with everything at Esporta Sheffield, the emphasis is on quality and service, and we’ll be looking to introduce new menus, offers and promotions wherever there is a benefit to our members.”

Esporta is the only Body Training Systems platinum club in Sheffield. The club’s facilities include a 25m heated crystal clear swimming pool with spa facilities; fully air-conditioned studio and gym which conduct 90 classes a week in a variety of activities like aerobics, Thai boxing, yoga and Pilates; crèche and children’s activities like swimming lessons; restaurant and on-site hairdresser.

New membership and joining offers are also on this month, for example an attractive Refer a Friend scheme. Call 0114 2505050 for an appointment, or visit www.esporta.com for more information.
